FDA seals are used by the food industry, they are often required by law to contain only the composite materials specified by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In this sector it is important to work with the right materials, for safety and to comply with laws and regulations. For food safety, guidelines have been drawn up for the materials (compounds) to be used in the food industry.

FDA SEALS FOR THE FOOD INDUSTRY

FDA O-rings and seals must consist only of the materials listed on the FDA's White List, found in the Code of Federal Regulations. Since the FDA has strict standards for materials that may come into contact with consumables, compounds used to make food grade rubber must comply with the FDA.

Materials that are part of the food supply chain can significantly affect food safety. Seals for these industries are required to not only withstand the speed and abrasive demands of continuous use, but they must also be made of FDA-compliant materials for chemical compatibility and non-toxicity.

FDA seals proposed for use by the food processing industry are often required by law to contain only those composite materials that have been determined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be safe for contact with food. Materials that meet these standards can then be designated as FDA compliant.

FDA-compliant materials generally provide the following:
• FDA materials are odorless and tasteless and provide natural resistance to bacterial growth.
• FDA materials provide reliable service over a wide range of temperatures.
• FDA materials are non-toxic, non-marking and non-allergenic materials.

Seals that meet FDA requirements are primarily made of Silicone, Nitrile, Fluorocarbon, Ethylene Propylene, and Neoprene.
